Abstract
The October Household Survey (OHS) was an annual sample survey undertaken by the Central Statistical Service (now Statistics South Africa) for the first time in 1993 and carried out until 1999. The original purpose of the OHS was to fill the data gap that resulted from the suspension of the Current Population Survey (CPS) and the related survey on the informal sector. Like the 1993 OHS the 1994 OHS collected data on employment, population and housing, but this time specifically to provide data for the new South African government's Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP).
Kind of Data
Sample survey data
Unit of Analysis
Households and individuals

Version

Version Description
v1.4: Edited, anonymised dataset for licensed distribution
Version Date
2008-03-25
Version Notes
Version 1 of the OHS 1994 dataset was obtained by DataFirst, provenance unknown.
Version 1.1 of the dataset was obtained from Statistics South Africa.
Version 1.2 was downloaded from the South African Data Archive (SADA).
Version 1.3 is a result of work done on versions 1.1.and 1.2 by Professor Martin Wittenberg for DataFirst's Data Quality Project (Please refer to Prof Wittenberg's article "October Household Survey 1994" available with this dataset for details of changes made). The values and variables have also been labeled in version 1.3
This version, version 1.4, is the Data Quality Project version 1.3 with a "Births" data file obtained from Statistics SA added to the dataset.

Note that versioning is done at data file level, so the unchanged but added Births file is still version 1, the updated files are version 1.3 but the dataset version has changed, i.e. version 1.3 with a new data file added, so now dataset version 1.4.

The questionnaire from SADA has also been corrected in the latest version.

NOTE ON FILE VERSIONS

Any changes made to a dataset will be reflected by a new dataset version number.
However, if data files within the dataset have not been changed, they will retain the previous version number.
In this case, version 1 of the "Births" file has been added to version 1.3 of the dataset to create dataset version 1.4. The files retain the previous version number to show that there have been no changes to these, the only change being the addition of the "Births" data file.

Sampling

Sampling Procedure
Unlike the 1993 OHS, the 1994 survey includes the former TBVC states(Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Ciskei: the former homelands)
and covers the nine provinces established after 1994. The 1991 Population Census served as the basis of the sample framework for the OHS. A stratified multi-stage cluster sample was used. The size and geographical distribution of the population were taken into account in stratifying according to (the predominant) population group and urban or non-urban region. Depending on the size of each stratum, between 20 and 70 enumerator areas (EAs) were drawn at random for inclusion in the sample. Within each EA a cluster of 30 households was drawn at random. Altogether 30300 households in 1010 EAs (Blacks 530 + Coloureds 160 + Asians 90 + Whites 230) were included in the sample.
Weighting
In August 2000 the October Household Survey 1994 was re-weighted based on the results of the 1996 Population Census, and the data re-released. The current dataset is version 1.4 which is the reweighted data with corrections by Professor Martin Wittenberg for the Data Quality Project, variable and value labels and a "births" file missing in the original obtained from Statistics SA and added to the dataset
